FCA BMP Manual

In 1997, the Florida Cattlemen's Association began a process to develop Water Quality Best Management Practices for Florida Cow/Calf Operations. The process included many hours of study, much debate and discussion and many meetings, all of which contributed to and are reflected in the BMP Manual. The FCA has asked the livestock agents of the state to distribute these manuals. We currently have them available to cattlemen at the extension office

The manual describes the water quality Best Management Practices (BMP's) for beef cow/calf operations in Florida. These practices are designed to protect our water bodies and maintain compliance with the States's water quality standards. These practices are specifically targeted for beef cow/calf operations in Florida and the activities that normally occur in conjunction with beef cattle production.

2001 Florida Cattlemen's Institute and Allied Trade Show

The 2001 Florida Cattlemen's Institute and Allied Trade Show is set for Thursday, January 18, 2001 at the Kissimmee Valley Agricultural Center on Highway 192 East of Kissimmee. The theme for this year is "Better Bulls, Better Beef". The Institute has an outstanding lineup of speakers that you will not want to miss hearing. You can see the enclosed brochure for the specific information on topics at this year's Institute. Please RSVP to the DeSoto County Extension Office (993-4846) if you plan to attend in order that we may make adequate plans for the noon meal. I would again encourage you to attend this year. There are speakers that have dynamic information for the Beef Cattle Industry.

Web Sites of Interest

There are several web sites (for those of you who have internet access) that I think you might want to have book marked if you are not currently using. One is the IFAS Florida Automated Weather Network (FAWN). That site is: http://fawn.ifas.ufl.edu/. Another web site of interest for Cattlemen is the National Cattlemen's Beef Association which is located at: http://beef.org. I would encourage any cattlemen who can to go to this site. There is a link back to the Florida Cattlemen's Association web site at: http://www.floridacattlemen.org/. You also can get the latest posted Arcadia State Livestock Auction Market Report at: http://www.ams.usda.gov/mnreports/OR_LS766.txt. As always I would encourage all of you to use the South Florida Beef/Forage Program web site as your home page. You can find our site at: http://ifas.ufl.edu/~sfbfp/beef.html. If you are using Netscape and want to make our web site your home page open up Netscape. Then go to edit and click on preferences. You will get a box that says Navigator starts with: and you will select home page. The next part of that is: selecting your home page. If at the time you do this, you are at the Beef/Forage Site listed above, then all you have to do is click on the button Use Current Page. If you use Internet Explorer click on tools and then click on internet options. Again a box will open and under the general tab it will tell you that you can choose which page to use as your home page. If you are at the Beef/Forage Web Page as you do this then simply click on the button Use Current. If you have any problem doing this feel free to call me at our office and I will help you get the home page set up.
