Better Production in the 21st Century

The 17th Annual Cattlemen's Institute and Allied Trade Show to be held on January 20, 2000 at the Kissimmee Valley Agricultural Center on Highway 192 East is just around the corner. If you have not made a room reservation, now is the time to do so. The headquarters Motel will be the Holiday Inn Express located just East of the Agricultural Center on Highway 192. For Motel Reservations call (407) 846-4646 and be sure to tell them that you will be attending the Florida Cattlemen's Institute and Allied Trade Show for their special rate of $49.00.

This year's Institute has a line up of speakers that you will not want to miss. The Institute will be providing a box lunch at Noon. We ask that you call us at (863) 993-4846 in order for us to know how many lunches to provide. This year we expect the agricultural/livestock trade show to be even larger and better than the past. Each year the trade show has approximately 70 plus exhibitors. Here you can find livestock and forage equipment, pharmaceuticals, feed and fertilizers along with agri-chemical dealers. Representatives from feedlots, along with breeding services, real estate, Ag-lending and financial services, and livestock supplies will be exhibiting at the trade show. We also expect to have several exhibitors of livestock this year. Interested individuals who would like to exhibit their products at the trade show should contact Mr. Charlie Williams, (407)846-4181, Osceola County CED/Livestock Agent or Mr. Terry Weaver (863)465-5856, Chairman, Florida Cattlemen's Institute Allied Membership Committee. Cattlemen interested in exhibiting cattle should contact Mr. Doug Mayo (863)533-0765, Polk County Extension Livestock Agent.

As we have said, you will not want to miss the outstanding line up of speakers. A program with the agenda for this year's Institute and Allied Trade Show is included in this Newsletter. Remember, call and let us know if you are planning to attend.

DDIS-Distance Diagnostic and Identification System

The University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences is in the process of developing a new service that will be known as DDIS (Distance Diagnostic and Identification System). This system will use a digital camera and the World Wide Web to send photographs of insects, diseased plants, and weeds from the field to the lab for rapid diagnosis and identification. The benefits will reach from consumers and homeowners all the way to commercial growers. I have acquired for the DeSoto County Extension Program a Digital Camera that will be capable of participating in this new technology. This should be especially valuable to Melon Producers. Please contact me for more information should you need this service.

How the World Wide Web Can Help
DeSoto County Cattle Producers?

The "Information Age" and the "Internet" are upon us with full force, but how can these tools be used to enhance productivity of the Cattle Industry? The Internet gives us rapid access to a tremendous amount of useful information, and allows us to communicate with each other in a way that we have not experienced before.

Many Universities and private companies in the United States, and around the world have established Internet sites which provide various services. The University of Florida has several Internet sites which can be used by Cattle Producers to obtain information on topics related to cattle production, as well as other areas of agriculture. As an agriculture producer would you like to know more about this whole subject area, including E-Mail??? If so, you may want to attend a class that DeSoto County Extension is doing in January on these subjects. We will be showing you how to use the internet, browsers, accessing web sites (especially those with the University of Florida), and using E-Mail.

We will be doing the first class on January 18, 1999 at 7:00 p.m. at the Family Service Center Annex. The second class will be held on January 25, 1999 at 7:00 p.m., also at the Family Service Center Annex. If you are interested in learning more about computers in agriculture, the internet and E-Mail, call our office at 993-4846 and enroll for these two classes. For those who do enroll and attend I plan to make available to them a CD which will have the latest version of Netscape, several e-mail programs and an anti-virus program.

If you have any comments or need additional information, please contact the DeSoto County Extension Office at (941) 993-4846.

Sincerely,

James F. Selph
